Additional resources for Designing Better Books
Andy Matuschak is a powerhouse thought leader (to me). His reflections prompted this inquiry.
Andy also wrote his own attempt at implementing "better books" in what he calls a "neumonic medium" which just means a form of writing that helps you remember; it's an essay with flashcards built in. But those flashcards will email you with "spaced repetition" reminders to maximize durable memory gained per unit effort.
Read his Mnemonic Medium here! It's a long and detailed introduction to quantum mechanics.
I had read about Quantum mechanics for years. I even met with college professors to ask questions about how the force of magnets is actually SHOOTING VIRTUAL PHOTOS. It's fundamentally mindbogglingly cool. But this essay was the first time I understood how quantum computation works on a deeper level (using some matrix multiplication). That mathematical foundation helped me 'get' what's actually happening much more clearly. I rate this essay 9/10 (points deducted cuz the math seems a bit extra at times?)
Another piece from Andy, longform exploration dives deep into how we can expand our thinking. It has amazing examples, would highly recommend looking around and maybe carving out an afternoon to dig in!
How can we develop transformative tools for thought?
I love the formatting of this, and how futnotes are pushed off to the side with an ever-present table of contents.
